Bailey, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi from Denmark

Last December, Mie C. and her boyfriend decided that they want to get a Corgi puppy in the summer. They wanted a Corgi because Corgis are smart, have fun and quirky personalities, and are big dogs that come in small and utterly cute packages. But in Denmark, where Mie lives, there are only 10 Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders, so she had to contact each breeder, hoping that one of them would accept her on their holding list for a puppy.

Unfortunately, none of the breeders had puppies available, nor they planned litters for the summer of 2011. Mie sadly realized that it would be another year, at least, before she could get a Corgi puppy. And here is where luck and faith intervened (or maybe it was the Holiday spirit), and on December 24th 2010, one of the breeders contacted Mie with good news: he had one puppy available, a red and white female with a natural bob tail. The breeder had her on-hold for another person, but since he didn?t hear from him in over a month, and decided to give Mie a call. And this is how Mie?s life changed.

In the blink of an eye Mie and her boyfriend happily agreed to get the puppy, and decided that on December 28th they would make a six hour train trip to pick up their new bundle of joy. She was named Bailey, after her creamy color and sweet and strong character.

Bailey loves playing tug of war with her ropes, she loves her stuffed dog toy, and she also likes sleeping on her back. She is a very smart 1 year old Corgi and she loves doing tricks, too. Her favorite one is ?Stick ?em up!?.

Personality

The Beagle is an easy to care for dog that is fairly low maintenance.� He does shed, but weekly brushing with a grooming glove or light brush will take of his coat easily.� He doesn?t require frequent bathing, and instead lightly running a moist towel over his coat or a bath wipe will take care of his coat in between baths.

Due to his long downed ears, routine ear care is a must.� They should be inspected for debris, reddening, and odor and regularly cleaned to avoid ear infections.

Routine nail trims and toothbrushing is the remainder of what is necessary.

Meeting fans on Australia Day?

Yesterday was Australia Day! It was a Public Holiday and Paul wasn?t on-call, so he got the day off!�

We had a lazy morning at home together ? then my�humans went off to have lunch in a very yummy Taiwanese restuarant called Din Tai Fung (which is really famous for their ?soup dumplings? ? voted the�tastiest in the world!) and then they went to the Art Gallery of NSW to see an exhibition by a famous Painter Human�called Picasso?

I don?t know what the fuss is about his paintings though ? they all look very strange to me! With eyes in weird places and heads in weird shapes?and some just look like funny boxes stacked on top of each other?

After my humans came home, they took me for my usual daily walk in the evening ? it had been a very rainy, grey day but it was still very hot & humid,�so it made me feel very panty. And even with the bad weather, there were still lots of people out celebrating?we passed by a big concert?and I also met some new fans!

Hsin-Yi has been helping me catch up with your blogs & messages ? but typing one comment after another (or one email after another) is the worst thing for her RSI ouchies?so she has been trying to use her Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software as much as she can. But it does slow us down a lot and takes double the time to do everything. Plus it still gets a lot of words wrong ? we try to check but sometimes we miss a few words so please forgive us if some of our comments sound a bit weird! Hsin-Yi also can?t do too much in one day ? so I know we still owe a lot of people replies to messages but please bear with us; we?re getting there slowly!

I adopted a Basset puppy I named Beauregarde. I didn't know what I was doing. Beauregarde turned out to be inbred and has a host of problems, including panostietis, roached back, and as a result of taking him at 6 weeks old instead of the recommended 12 weeks, he also developed severe separation anxiety.

After I had him about 2 weeks his back legs quit working. I sought help on the net and left a phone message with Daphneyland, a member of the Basset Hound Rescue Network. I was instructed for the next several months via phone on how to rehab and train him. Deep tissue message, Welless glucosomine, yucca powder, ARTH 9, range of motion exercises.

I adopted his 2 year old father to provide him with companionship and motivation. It worked. over the next 5 months he improved so much he became capable of taking 3-5 mile daily walks.

This Christmas he swallowed something that wouldn't pass. He very nearly died. If not for the extraordinary efforts of Dawn Smith at Daphneyland Ranch, a member of the Basset Hound Rescue Network, he would have. I surrender my little buddy to her and he is now on the long road to recovery. As a result of this emergency it was discovered that he is in a precancerous state with low white count and badly swollen lymph glands. Dawn tells me she may still be able to save him.

There are three things I want this story to tell. First that Dawn and the volunteers at Daphneyland is the ONLY rescue kennel in North America. Second, that the Ridgecrest, CA area as far as I know has NO reputable breeders. The area has a terrible reputation for inbred Bassets. Contact Dawn for more information.

Third is the emotional hell I am still going thru. Putting him in that SUV for transport to West Lake for emergency surgery, knowing I would in all likelihood never see him again was hell on earth for me. Bassets have an extreme tolerance for pain. They've been known to take terrible injury and barely whimper. If any of the breeders in this area had seen him, head down, tail down, to week to move, and WHIMPERING IN PAIN, their tunes would change. I cried for a week. Every morning I get up and still cry for a minute, there's only one bowl to prepare, the bed room is silent no deep, loud, happy baying (He has a big beautiful voice) demanding his breakfast. These breeders aren't hurting only Bassets, they are hurting people too.

As I have taken my daily miles long walk with Max, Beauregarde's dad, and Lemon Drop, his sister whom I am rehabing for poor socialization skills (she has spent the better part of her 8 months in a trailer house, only out twice a day for a few minutes), I have had the opportunity to meet quite a few people in this small (20,000) rural town. There are dozens of Bassets in the area. Yet, I see no one walking their Basset. When I ask how many miles a day they do with them I hear "Oh, we have a large fenced yard for him." ARRRRGh!!!

But I think this conversaion I had with a Basset owner says it all. I was walking Beauregarde's mother, Molly, for her owner (I hate that term for a Basset. You DON'T own a Basset. You are the dominate member of a life long friendship). This gentleman (I'll call him Stu) asked if I wanted to breed Molly to his 1 year old Basset. I told him that she was an inbred. He replied "That's Okay mines not." So pointed out the precancerous cysts that are all over her. He still tried to get me to arrange a pairing of the two. I told him that the only way he could be sure his dog wasn't inbred was to do a 3500 dollar genetics study to determine it. He told me it wasn't true, that his papers proved it and ask if I knew any where he could get his friend bred. I gave him Daphneylasnds kennel number. SICCUUM DAWN!!!

Some people are lucky enough to own more than one Corgi. Angela W. is one of them. She owns three beautiful Pembrokes: Molly, Moxy and Muffin. Angela lives in Jakarta, Indonesia with her three Corgis, and she always wanted Corgis, first of all, because she likes how they look with those huge ears, and long and short bodies. Second of all, she loves the Corgi temper and attitude. Angela?s girls are fun to be around, they?re friendly, smart and cute.

Molly is 5 years old and she?s the mother of Muffin and Moxy, who are both 3 years old. Molly is a smart tri-colored Corgi that knows how to behave nice to get what she wants. Her favorite sleeping spot is under the table, and she?s afraid of thunder.

Moxy has a beautiful sable coat, she?s tender, loving and Angela spoils her a lot. Moxy has a sweet personality and likes to be around people. She also loves getting her belly rubbed.

Muffin is the hyperactive one of the gang, likes to have fun, but she can be loving and tender, too. She also likes food a lot and can eat almost anything.
